Wine, about it:
Serving
Did you know that the cork was developed as a bottle closure in the late 17th century? It was only after this that bottles were lain down for aging, and the bottle shapes slowly changed from short and bulbous to tall and slender. If I have you wondering how they got the cork out, the corkscrew was invented in 1860. If you didn’t know, now you do!
Ever wondered what temperature to serve wine? Ideally, white wine should be chilled (45-55 degrees F) for a few hours in the refrigerator. Red wine should be slightly cooler than room temperature (about 65 degrees). Younger fruity reds benefit from chilling. You can always throw your red wine in the fridge for 10 minuets to get it to the right serving temperature. Sparkling wine, my personal favorite, needs to be thoroughly chilled. Try refrigerating your bubbly several hours or the night before serving. Contrary to popular belief, dessert wine should room temperature.
We got “spirits” yes we do:
Scotch
Did you know, that in order to be called Scotch whisky, a whisky must be distilled and matured in Scotland? And just so we get it straight, a whisky can be called Scotch whisky only after it has matured for a minimum of three years in oak casks in Scotland. Interestingly enough, the first documented proof of the existence of a distillery in Scotland dates back to 1494.
There are two types of Scotch whisky; Single Malt Scotch Whisky and Blended Scotch Whisky. Single Malt Scotch Whisky is made from 100% malted barley and distilled at a single distillery. Blended Scotch Whisky is made by blending together a number of single malts and grain whiskies. Just in case you thought I was spelling it wrong, the whisky in ‘Scotch Whisky’ is always spelt without an ‘e’.
In Britain, the term ‘whisky’ means Scotch whisky only, unless it has been specified otherwise. In English-speaking countries other than England, Scotch whisky is often referred to as simply ‘Scotch’. This info may come in handy if you ever find yourself in England and want to order a scotch on the rocks!
